My mother taught me how to reupholster years ago. Because I did it with her, and she was extremely talented and knowledgable, I had a great time and very good results. Generally by the time you decide to re-do furniture, anything will look better! Make sure everything is tight, use as many of the professional items that you can buy, and just take your time.

“Idiocracy” should be required viewing.Michelle is an idiot. Since she is not running for president, maybe she should shut her pie hole.I’m late in answering this, but, yes, it is an attack on, basically older, conservative-minded people, (not specifically the Conservative party, but them as well). If she spent any time at all with people who “covered their furniture with plastic” (older people who worked hard for their belongings, and thus can be perceived to “over-cherish” their possessions via plastic protective sheets), she wouldn’t be the moron that she has become. She is basically making a condescending statement to the people who kept her country safe and free. The people who fought for freedom and worked hard for their families, in the days before welfare was used as a voting incentive.

Quilt batting does not make very good padding cause it is to thin, if you use enough batting the seat will be to hard. You can just buy a piece of foam and cut your own padding, all you need to do is remove the old fabric and padding. trace the pattern of the chair seat on the foam using a marker, Remove the seat from the foam cut the foam with scisors or a knife, repeat for each chair. No you don’t have to use heavy fabric you can use what ever fabric you want, but just remember the thiner the fabric the shorter it’s life.

It is simply called an upholstry staple remover. Needlenose pliers also work well.

I also inherited a pile of basement stored antique furniture~since cleaning is preferable to reupholstering, I would see what you can do to get rid of the smell first. What I did:I sprinkled the chairs with basking soda, vacuumed them thoroughly, then set them outside in the sun for several days. Some of my friends swear by Febreeze, I’ve never tried it myself. If it still stinks, send them out to be cleaned commercially. If that doesn’t work, or, if there is visible mold on the furniture, you will have to strip it clear down to the frame. Be sure you take a photograph first ~ it’s much easily for an upholstery to remake the chair if he has a guideline to go by.

I think you could probably do that, but make sure you have an alternative sofa just in case you ruin in beyond your ability to save it. Having a professional do it could make it more expensive than a new sofa. We had one reupholstered because I could not finda new sofa to fit the available space. A new one would have been cheaper, and I didn’t have the frame rebuilt, just the fabric replaced and the stuffing redone.Good Luck!

You can go to a shop that sells upholstery fabric , and has the rolls in the store. By doing this you will get a better idea of what the chair is going to look like when it is finished. They also may have lists of people they would reccommend to do the work. If anyone was on their list and people have complained about them I’m sure they would be stricken from the list.I owned a design business for 15 years, so here are the cautions, or things to be aware of.Most upholstery shops have sample books, with small swatches of each fabric. It is hard for some people to visualize what the finished chair would look like- that’s why I suggested you go to the fabric store instead of to the upholsters shop first and look-wait to buy until you find the person to do it.To save yourself some money call around to some shops you have been reccommended to and ask these two questions, IN THIS ORDER. 1) “How much do you charge to cover an arm chair”-they will ask you if it has loose cushions, a skirt, cording, buttons. These answers will help them come up with a price. After they give you a price, then say 2) “Do you charge any more if I have my own fabric”(since you have seen something you like at the fabric store. If they give you a much higher price(because they aren’t making a profit on the fabric) you can go into their shop now and see if they have something similar to what you saw in the fabric store, and then decide if you want to get fabric from them or the other store. Also be aware that recliners are a real pain to recover, and it may cost you More than it would be to buy a new one. Unless it has value to you because it was your grandpa’s you may choose to buy a new one.

sand, or degloss the existing finish. prime with a bonding/stain blocking primer, tinted to deep gray, then apply 2 to 3 coats of paint. spraying it would give the best finish, but if you must brush and or roll, add penetrol to oil based paint or floetrol to latex, to provide a self leveling component( to reduce brush marks). honestly, i would get pricing from a local industrial painter who could spray it all. you would get the best finish that way, and it would be no work for you.

Unfortunately, reupholstering furniture is very expensive. Check your telephone book for listings, call a furniture store to see if they can recommend someone or even a drapery workroom (someone who custom makes draperies). If they are antiques, you may want to try a reputable antique dealer for a referral.Silk is very delicate and pricey. It does not hold up well in upholstery pieces. The labor could vary. If the sofa needs cushion replacement, you would have to factor that in. Ballpark figure $1600.00.I am assuming your two chairs are fully upholstered since you have two ottomans, so ballpark, $650.00 and $450.00 for the two ottomans. This is one of the reasons that people end up buying new pieces of furniture. These prices might be a little high. I would take some pictures and bring them with you for quotes and if you can, take a cushion to be evaluated.Good luck.
